Summer Fun List

Saturday, May 28, 2011

List making is a favorite among my female friends. (Do guys make lists?)

A few of the things I'm looking forward to this summer!

Afternoon picnic at Longwood Gardens complete w/ fireworks
ALA Annual in the Big Easy
Going to Polyface Field Day
Wicked at the Kennedy Center
Strawberry picking
Camping at Assateague
Sweeney Todd at Wolf Trap
Popsicle making with IKEA molds
A double wedding weekend in Utah

And you? Any grand summer outings planned?

Hel-lo Lover

Friday, May 27, 2011

For awhile I was in a reading funk. However my most recent read, The Lover's Dictionary, a novel that constructs an entire relationship as a dictionary, pulled me back.

And really, isn't that what summer is all about?

Reading, I mean.

Some of my favorite entries were: corrode, qulam, suffuse, tableau, and x.

A sampling of other favorites includes:

cajole, v.

I didn't understand how someone from a completely land-
locked state could be so terrified of sharks. Even in the
aquarium, I had to do everything to get you to come close
to the tank.

impromptu, adj.
I have summer Fridays off; you don't. So what better reason for
me to take you to lunch and then keep you at lunch for the whole
afternoon? Reserving these afternoons to do all the city things we
never get around to doing — wandering through MoMA, stopping in
at the Hayden Planetarium, hopping onto the Staten Island Ferry
and riding back and forth, back and forth, watching all the people
as they unknowingly parade for us. Had we tried to plan these
excursions, they never would have worked.
There has to be that feeling of escape.

only, adj.
That's the dilemma, isn't it? When you're single, there's the sadness
and joy of only me. And when you're paired, there's the sadness and
joy of only you.

So Much

And not enough.

I have a great deal I'd like to say. Brilliant blog posts bubbling in the back of my brain. For now though I'll just say Thank You.

Thank you for my health. (January was one long wretched month.)
Thank you for the promise of spring. (Forsythias are fighting to burst forth.)

Thank you for hearing even what I can't/don't articulate.
Thank you for tears. (The soppy kind that cleanse. Stop. Then cleanse again.)
Thank you for stereo vision.
Thank you for future weekend getaways. (This time to NYC with the boy.)
Thank you for browned butter and cookie swaps.
Thank you for dramatic femme fatals that belt crazy out all over the stage.

Life is good. Staying away can sometimes mean that life off screen is a bit more exciting. I'd say that's definitely the case for this gal.

Starting Anew

Monday, January 3, 2011

I rang in the new year in the lovely town of Warm Springs, VA. It was the perfect start to what I anticipate will be an equally idyllic year. Besides, who can resist a celebration that starts with chocolate fondue, candles, and two nights at this charming Villa?

During one of our day outings we ventured off to Lake Moomaw, where the stillness was punctured only by the sound of our own breathe and a steady snow melt. As we stood watching the last wisps of pink sunset fade behind the glassy landscape I felt a calm assurance that their really are answers.

Answers I have access to.
Answers to the eternal Why?
Or better yet, the optimistic Why Not?

May 2011 be filled with answers to whatever you are seeking after.
