Hel-lo Lover

For awhile I was in a reading funk. However my most recent read, The Lover's Dictionary, a novel that constructs an entire relationship as a dictionary, pulled me back.

And really, isn't that what summer is all about?

Reading, I mean.

Some of my favorite entries were: corrode, qulam, suffuse, tableau, and x.

A sampling of other favorites includes:

cajole, v.

I didn't understand how someone from a completely land-
locked state could be so terrified of sharks. Even in the
aquarium, I had to do everything to get you to come close
to the tank.

impromptu, adj.
I have summer Fridays off; you don't. So what better reason for
me to take you to lunch and then keep you at lunch for the whole
afternoon? Reserving these afternoons to do all the city things we
never get around to doing — wandering through MoMA, stopping in
at the Hayden Planetarium, hopping onto the Staten Island Ferry
and riding back and forth, back and forth, watching all the people
as they unknowingly parade for us. Had we tried to plan these
excursions, they never would have worked.
There has to be that feeling of escape.

only, adj.
That's the dilemma, isn't it? When you're single, there's the sadness
and joy of only me. And when you're paired, there's the sadness and
joy of only you.
